Organisation Name : Economic Media Centre

Our mission is to support people with diverse experiences and backgrounds participate in economic policy debates through mainstream media. 

Our theory of change is simple. By building the capacity of grassroots and community spokespeople to participate in policy debates in the media, we help secure more inclusive economic policies.

At the Economic Media Centre we work cross sector and pro bono to:

  • Train and support community spokespeople from diverse cultural, racial, class and gender backgrounds to engage with mainstream media.
  • Deliver media strategy and pitching at key moments to help spokespeople influence key policy debates. 
  • Provide narrative and messaging support to help small groups and NGOs shift economic narratives. 

 

In 2022 we are focussed on the following three priority issues:

  • Strong public services - Housing, public health services, disability and the NDIS, aged care, child care and income support.
  • Income inequality - Through a gender equity lens, regional and rural, older people, young people and future-proof jobs.
  • Inclusion of people marginalised by economic systems - Migrant workers, refugees, First Nations people, LGBTQI+ people, low-wage and essential workers.

About the role

ABOUT YOU 

You’re a passionate media campaigner who loves working with others to help them achieve their goals. 

You are organised, diligent and results-orientated and calm, cool and collected managing competing deadlines and priorities. You have experience developing media packages, pitches and supporting media spokespeople to develop and implement media strategies. You’re interested in Australia’s political landscape and the media’s role in shaping policy environments. 

 

You’re confident drafting and finalising a range of media materials including media releases, opinion pieces, media briefings and messaging advice. You understand the media cycle and you’re driven to identify media opportunities, news hooks and angles and can place stories. You’re an excellent communicator all-round, motivated to develop creative and engaging content for the media. 

 

SKILLS 

  • Media industry experience – understanding of the Australian media landscape, political landscape, newsrooms processes and role of the media in setting public agendas. Capacity to track, analyse and influence media narratives. 
    • Ability to nurture relationships – provide support for media spokespeople through formal training and informal support and advice and build strong relationships with journalists.
    • Strong writing skills capable of writing quickly and effectively in a range of styles and formats including media releases, opinion pieces, social media content and emails. 
    • Understanding of media campaign communications advocacy approaches and the ability to develop and execute media strategies for impact, in consultation with senior staff. 
    • High-level project management skills – including project planning, execution and evaluation experience. 
  • Responsiveness you’re a rapid responder comfortable making quick decisions in complex situations with a high tolerance for ambiguity. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing competing deadlines.
  • A good understanding of Australia’s political landscape would be a plus.

REMUNERATION: 

Salary is $80,000 pro rata plus 10.5% superannuation.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

  • The role will be offered as a fixed term contract, beginning in June 2022 and finishing on 30 June 2023, with the opportunity to transition to permanent employment after this time. 
  • This role is a 0.8 – 1.0FTE position, with flexibility to work outside ordinary working hours. Applicants who need to work flexibly within these part-time hours will be considered.
  • We have a preference for a Melbourne-based candidate, although will consider Sydney, South Australia, and Canberra based applicants.
