Based at our offices at Sydney’s Observatory Hill, the right applicant will be an enthusiastic and knowledgeable facilities management expert, adept at working across multiple locations. By ensuring the various systems and procedures the Trust has remain in place and up to date, you will be helping to ensure the delicate balance between conservation, historic integrity, safety and compliance can be met.

With over 20 properties open to the public, and a number of properties held under other various arrangements including private leases, this is a truly unique opportunity for the right person to play a central role in helping to ensure the ongoing care and operation of our historic places.

We are seeking someone who can demonstrate extensive and relevant experience in facilities, compliance, monitoring, maintenance and financial management. Working with our various staff, volunteers and contractors will require a candidate with excellent personal skills and a proven ability to build strong relationships across a portfolio.

The right candidate for this role will need to be invested in the vision of the National Trust, and able to work with our Conservation Director and Properties Managers, along with our numerous property staff and volunteers. Although the role will be based in our headquarters at Observatory Hill, it will require travel to our various properties.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the Conservation Director, your key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Coordinating the overall maintenance of our properties in terms of their daily operation including ensuring invoices are paid, and relevant compliance measures are undertaken.
  • Monitoring the various systems across our properties, including air conditioning, security and fire systems across all properties to ensure they remain in operation.
  • Being a first point of contact for many property related matters including fire and security monitoring, and maintaining contractor details and property records.
  • Helping to prepare maintenance and repair budgets across our property portfolio.
  • Undertaking site visits as required.
  • Exercising due diligence to ensure occupational, work health and safety risks are addressed.
  • Commitment to promoting the aspirations of the Trust in ways which are relevant to the broader community, ensuring the brand is recognised, respected and embraced by all cultures

This role will be within our Conservation Department, which is responsible for advocacy, archives, property and collections conservation and maintenance.

  • Considerable experience in a similar role, preferably within the heritage sector, with a sound understanding of compliance measures and approval processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant building systems.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, and the ability to communicate and engage with all levels of the organisation, especially volunteers
  • Strong problem solving capabilities with an excellent attention to detail and ability to be responsive to the needs of the portfolio
  • Class C driver’s license and a willingness to travel to the various regional properties
  • Five to 10 years’ experience in a similar role
