POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Northern Territory Regional Assistant Secretary

 

We are looking for a NT Regional Assistant Secretary.

 

This is a leadership development role and will have significant periods acting as Regional Secretary, with a view to ongoing appointment to NT Regional Secretary role.

 

The CPSU is a dynamic union covering our most important Commonwealth public institutions. This is a brilliant opportunity for someone with strong skills and a genuine commitment to our union fighting for workers’ rights, who’s looking to step up into union leadership.

 

We are an unusual union, with Regional Secretaries appointed by the National Secretary and an Executive of officials elected by all members. You may be someone who has been a rank-and-file leader or staff member of the CPSU before, who’s working for another union, involved in the labour movement and who has union experience.

 

You will work closely with the current NT Regional Secretary and be acting Regional Secretary for expected periods of long leave.

 

You will be essential to implementing the CPSU’s strategic plan at a state level, providing advice to the National Secretary and Executive, representing the CPSU in external forums while working to motivate a committed team of organisers, lead organising and collaborate with local allies with the aim of achieving the best outcomes for CPSU members and the wider union movement.

Position Title:  NT Regional Assistant Secretary

 

Position Location: Northern Territory, Darwin

 

Employment Status:  Permanent (subject to probation)

Upon commencement, appointment to temporary NT Regional Assistant Secretary leadership development role with significant periods of acting Regional Secretary, with a view to ongoing appointment to NT Regional Secretary at a date to be determined.

 

Classification & Salary for NT Regional Assistant Secretary: Organiser Level 3.1 to 3.5, $108,426 to $121,620 per annum (includes the Organiser Expense Allowance paid as salary), and 15.4% superannuation.

Darwin Remote Localities Allowance of $6,366 per annum is also payable on a fortnightly basis.

 

Classification and Salary for NT Regional Secretary: Organiser 4.1, $127,570 per annum (fixed pay point) and 15.4% superannuation.

Position reports to:  National Secretary, with day-to-day supervision by NT Regional Secretary

 

Positions reporting to this position are: Field Organisers

 

Overview of NT Regional Assistant Secretary

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate strong leadership capacity and the necessary attributes to undertake the NT Regional Secretary Role and the requirements of the position, including the ability to represent the National Secretary and support the political direction of the CPSU.

The role will support the Regional Secretary in the Northern Territory to build effective relationships, a strong union and credible voice for Northern Territory members in the workplace, the union movement and community and act as Regional Secretary during periods of anticipated long leave. 

The Regional Assistant Secretary will assist the Regional Secretary in representing; advising; supporting good governance; leading staff and NT efforts for growth and member outcomes; and lead workplace leaders. 

The position will play a key role in developing and implementing effective campaigns and strategies to assist members to bring about positive change in their workplaces. 

 

Selection Criteria

The NT Regional Assistant Secretary will undertake the following seven key areas of work.  As this is a development opportunity, the NT Regional Assistant Secretary will demonstrate capacity to meet. or with reasonable development have the capacity to meet the following selection criteria.

 

  1. Represent: Represent the National Secretary and CPSU in advocating for the union and managing relationships across the union movement, Parliamentary representatives, strategic community, media and as a locally and nationally affiliated union with the ALP.
  2. Advise: Provide high level strategic advice to the National Secretary, Executive Committee (EC) and Directors on matters affecting the CPSU in the Northern Territory. This includes on union plans, for EC & Attendees and Governing Council.
  3. Support good governance: Support compliance with governance requirements and manage key risks for the CPSU in the Northern Territory, including but not limited to legislative, Rules and policy obligations.
  4. Lead staff for growth and member outcomes: Lead, motivate, supervise and develop Darwin staff and oversee management of NT staff and the regional office, including whole of office activities.
  5. Lead Northern Territory efforts for growth and member outcomes: Lead, develop, recommend and implement the union’s plans in the Northern Territory, including organising, growing and representing CPSU members.
  6. Lead workplace leaders: Lead, motivate and develop union honorary leaders, workplace delegates and build effective workplace union structures in the Northern Territory.
  7. Level 3 tasks: Takes on designated work from time to time, as capacity allows, as a Level 3 senior staff member, including managing a specific project / function or participating in a project team.

 

Interstate travel including attending Executive Committee and Governing Council meetings is required.  Some out of hours work is required.
