Change The World For Ten Bucks
26 August 2005 at 1:08 pm

Pilotlight is in partnership with the UK movement known as We Are What We Do to produce an Australia-wide action manual called CHANGE THE WORLD FOR TEN BUCKS.

Pilotlight describes CHANGE THE WORLD FOR TEN BUCKS as a book of simple, everyday actions they reckon pretty much everyone can do.

Published by Hardie Grant and Pilotlight it’s about 50 simple everyday actions that everyone can do to make the world a better place. They are deceptively simple things that don’t require masses of time, money, even conscience to achieve.

The book has a clear plastic protective cover and includes such actions as ‘learn the kiss of life’ (Action1) turn off the tap while washing your teeth (action 31), spend time with someone from a different generation (action 14) to do something for nothing (action 50).

The book includes a host of related websites (learn more do more Action 49) offering more information on the action and how to do it.

According to the producers if enough people actually do them, we will change the world.

The action book is part of the We Are What We Do movement established originally in the UK, who produced a bestselling book called ‘Change the World for a Fiver’.

The Australian book has been changed significantly from the UK version to address Australia specific issues and to cater to the Australian public.

The book aims to practice what it preaches. Everyone involved has provided their services for free or at the very least, at cost, including illustrators, design agencies, the publisher, distributors and the booksellers, who will sell the book at a greatly reduced margin.

Any money raised through sales of the book (though this is not the aim), will be applied to furthering the We Are What We Do movement worldwide, including in Australia.

The book launches in October 2005 here in Australia and will retail for $10.

By keeping the cost of the book to a minimum, the aim is to maximise the circulation of the book and subsequently the activity undertaken by individuals.

The book is designed to be as inclusive as possible and is suitable for everyone irrespective of age, class, religion and gender.

We Are What We Do is a project of the UK Charity Community Links. Community Links tackles the causes and consequences of social exclusion in East London and shares the local experiences with practitioners and policy makers nationwide.
