Students Offer Design Work to Charities

For a fifth consecutive year, graphic design and new media students at Wollongong University are looking to Pro Bono Australia readers for some practical experience while helping with their charity design needs.

Myriam Kin-Yee who is running the Commercial Practice program says one of the University’s third year classes is devoted to commercial practice to give the students an experience of working with clients.

Students work to a 13-week session, beginning March 2007. The projects need to be something that could be produced in that time.

The work is undertaken on the following terms:

1) That the group supplies the necessary material for a reasonably substantial student project

2) The work can be bought to completion or near completion within the Session – 13 Weeks from 1 March 2007

3) One or more organisation members agree to act as ‘clients’ for the students to work to.

That is they will undertake to supply the material; consult with the students and give feedback; provide information on how far the job should be taken and so on

4) Agree to contribute some funds (at your discretion) towards the Graduate Exhibition at the end of the year [all the participating students benefit from the exhibition and catalogue].
In return the students agree to:

1) Work professionally with the client

2) Provide a number of design ‘roughs’ [visual ideas] for the client’s consideration

3) Bring the work to prototype stage [preferably to final production depending on the time]

4) Provide a ‘style guide’ so if the work is not completed it can be handed over with all relevant files and instructions on how the work can be produced.

Not for Profits can contact Myriam Kin-Yee directly on 02 44465 2122 or send an email to myriam@uow.edu.au
