Aussie Finalists in Global Green Awards

Three Australian organisations, including a Government High School, are finalists in the UK-based International Green Awards for their sustainability efforts.
The international awards base the nominations on the sustainability, vision and level of innovation and advocacy of the short listed organisations.
Bentleigh Secondary College in Melbourne was one of four nominated for the Most Sustainable Educational Institution.
Head of Sustainability from Bentleigh Secondary College, Bill Thomas, said that the school has reduced its water usage by 91% within a year by implementing water saving devices wherever possible.
“We only use harvested water for irrigation,” Thomas said.
“Water is trapped and stored in an underground tank. This tank is pumped 500 meters to a sub-surface irrigation system that delivers the water 30 cms below one of our playing fields. This makes the grass more drought resistant and removes water loss through evaporation.”
The Government-funded school won the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Award in 2011 for Excellence in Sustainable Water Management.
Sydney based printing company Focus Press which offers a range of offset and digital print solutions was nominated for the Most Sustainable Medium Organisation.
The judges said they were impressed by the diversity of this year’s applications, in terms of geographical spread and the projects themselves.
Winner’s across all categories will be announced at the International Green Awards ceremony on 20 November 2012, in London.
