The Board of the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS), the state’s peak welfare organisation, has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer – the second top appointment in less than 10 months.

The new CEO is Emma King who is currently Chief Executive Officer of Early Learning Association Australia (ELAA), formerly Kindergarten Parents Victoria, which represents 1200 early childhood education and care providers.

King takes over the role from Penny Wilson who was appointed in July 2012 and was formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Responsible Gambling Advocacy Centre and had held the senior roles of Deputy Director and Acting Executive Director of Strategic Communications in the Victorian Government.

“Ms King is widely respected in the Victorian community sector and in government for her inclusive leadership, collaborative approach and policy advocacy,” VCOSS Board President Micaela Cronin said.

“Ms King is committed to delivering better outcomes for vulnerable Victorians, and working with all stakeholders to make a real difference. She is an excellent appointment for VCOSS.

“Her leadership will strengthen the work of VCOSS to achieve positive and lasting change for vulnerable Victorians, and to strengthen the community sector at a time of major reform and increasing need for services and supports.”

King said she was excited to be joining VCOSS, to work across the broad range of issues that improve the lives of all Victorians.

The Board said King would bring to VCOSS a sound understanding of the role of a peak body and the importance of an effective community sector.

“Her experience in government and workforce development is also highly valued.”

King begins as VCOSS CEO on Monday 8 July 2013. The acting CEO is Carolyn Atkins.
