About the organisation

Organisation name : Kids Like Us

Kids Like Us Australia is a charitable organisation with strong elements of social enterprise. KLU believes in the power of inspired twice-exceptional (2e) young people and has a passionate commitment to inclusion.

Twice-exceptional students may excel in many areas or in a very narrow specific domain. However, a twice-exceptional (2e) student also has a challenge of some kind – this challenge may be officially identified as a disability or social emotional problem. Having a unique combination of formidable abilities and disabilities causes dissonance in traditional educational environments, leading to potential failure and emotional distress.

KLU’s work ensures that members of the 2e community have an opportunity to feel connected and active, which informs the diverse nature of the services they offer. KLU is the only organisation which supports 2e young people in Australia and is highly influential. With typical revenues in excess of $600K p.a., 25+ employees and an untapped pool of volunteers this is a not-for-profit organisation on the verge of rapid growth. The organisation offers a range of services across Australia with a head office in Beaumaris, Victoria. The transition to an online platform in 2020 has the potential to benefit all members of the 2e community, nationally.

The services provided by KLU include:

  • Mental Health support
  • Learning support
  • Learning enhancement
  • Peer support
  • Family and parent support
  • Educational advocacy
  • Community Engagement Programs
  • NDIS Disability Services

The last couple of years have been a time of substantial change for the organisation as it has sought to offer new services and optimise its business models for existing services.
