About the role

Playwriting Australia (PWA) – Australia’s national new play development organisation – is currently seeking to appoint two additional Directors to our Board.

‘We seek people passionate about the power of live theatre, who are committed to investing in the growth of a distinctly Australian culture.’ says Artistic Director/CEO Lachlan Philpott. ‘Our Board are a dynamic group who play a crucial role in the strategic direction, governance and impact of this significant one of a kind Australian arts organisation’.

Established in 2007, PWA’s purpose is to develop new Australian plays and provide the best professional development pathways for Australian playwrights at all levels of their careers. We seek, develop and champion new plays for the stage that tell Australian stories celebrating, investigating and provoking questions about our lives and the state of our nation. To get the best plays to stage, we invest in playwrights, offering them a range of professional development programs accessible to all ages and backgrounds. PWA has a strong track record supporting First Nations and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse writers and our long‐term vision is to effect generational change in Australian theatre; contributing to a society where new plays are consistently excellent, more widely produced, representative of Australia’s evolving diversities, and embraced by audiences as central to Australian life.  Each year, we receive and assess around 300 script submissions to our programmes, we support the development and promotion of up to 30 new Australian plays, employ more than 120 artists and reach audiences of over 1,500 with public performances, playwriting workshops and masterclasses. Some of Australia’s best new plays and finest playwrights have come through our programs.

The role of the PWA Board is to provide governance, purpose and leadership to the organisation, whilst overseeing its strategy.  It comprises people with a wide range of skills and with diverse backgrounds.

We seek to identify and appoint two Directors to commence in early 2019.
