About the role
The role of BirdLife WA Executive Committee Chair
BirdLife Australia’s Board delegates the management, control and general administration of BWA to the Executive Committee which delegates some management of activities to volunteer committees or coordinators who organise excursions, surveys, education programs, research projects and advocacy advice. The Chair takes overall responsibility for the Committee’s operation and acts as the main point of contact with the rest of the organisation. The position of Chair is entirely voluntary and some travel costs may be covered. The amount of time required of the Chair is variable and roles can be delegated to other members of the committee.
In effect, the voluntary role of BWA Chair is to provide coordination and future direction within the organisation for members and supporters in WA. It is a challenging role that will suit an experienced person who is passionate about bird and bird conservation in WA and is looking to make a difference. The role is well supported by members of BWA EC and the Office Manager as well as Birdlife Australia staff when required.
The Chair is expected to: Ensure compliance with the Constitution of BirdLife Australia; Ensure compliance with Birdlife Australia governance, policies and procedures; Be accountable to the BirdLife Australia CEO and Members; Chair EC meetings and the AGM in a manner which values participation and contributions from other members (or to appoint another member of the Committee when unable to attend); Work with the EC to implement BirdLife Australia’s Strategy & Operating Plan and develop Annual Plans; Work with BirdLife Australia employees to deliver its priority research and conservation programs; Work with the Network Development Coordinator, participate (or delegate participation to a representative) in network teleconferences and the annual Network meeting in Melbourne; Encourage local participation of Members and supporters; and Represent the branch professionally at a local level, or area of expertise; Have a strong interest in nature, conservation and/or birdlife; and Have experience in people management.
