About the role

Banksia Palliative Care Service (Banksia) is the sole Victorian State Government funded, not-for-profit community Palliative Care Service for the 3 local government areas of Banyule, Nillumbik and Whittlesea. We provide services at no cost to an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometres in a high population growth corridor in Melbourne, with a diverse community of approximately 420,000 people.

We provide person-centered care. Our philosophy is to treat the person as a ‘whole’ – mind and body are integrated and inseparable; physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs are determined as equally important. We deal with each client, and their carers as unique individuals, we do not assume or expect; we determine needs based on conversation and exploration, working with the person, and /or their closest advocate. Our priority is to enable maximum independence and facilitate choice through the provision of options and information.

Our Client & Carer Support Volunteers visit clients, their carers and/or their family in their location of choice – often their home.  This can include private residences, age care facilities, supported care facilities and anything in between. Our Volunteers provide direct support for clients, carers and families as part of our multi-disciplinary team, enabling respite for carers and companionship for our clients.

Our volunteers become the link between a client and their family reconnecting with the community and themselves, when their deteriorating health might otherwise make this impossible. We work in a flexible way to manage support, in whatever shape that may take, for both the client and our volunteers.
