About the role

Avenue Neighbourhood House @ Eley (ANH@E) is a very vibrant and strong Neighbourhood House that has been operating for over 30 years. We are the only not for profit Registered Training Organisation operating within the City of Whitehorse, specialising in the provision of accredited educational courses for people with low literacy and numeracy skills. Our courses are designed to help learners gain the confidence and skills needed to look for a job or go onto further study. In addition, ANH@E provides an extensive range of low cost social and recreational activities such as yoga, strength training, poetry, dancing, singing, music, line dancing creative writing and childcare.

Avenue Neighbourhood House operates on the community development model of practice that encourages community participation and development of partnerships/ networks to address disadvantage and social exclusion/isolation. ANH@E is manager by a volunteer committee of management and has a staff of 7 part time workers and over 10 casual tutors. Avenue Neighbourhood House is strongly reliant on volunteers, we currently have over 20 volunteers who drive our community bus, maintain our garden, clean our kitchen, assist in class rooms and provide reception / administrative support.

AHN@E has a vacancy on our Committee of Management due to the retirement of a member after many years of service. To fulfill our governance obligations as a Neighbourhood House we strive to make our committee inclusive and as representative of our diverse community as possible.

We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals wanting to make a difference and to be involved in an extremely fulfilling community role.

ANH@E seeks enthusiastic people with a range of interests and life experiences. Potential candidates will need to have:
– an interest in helping in a community organisation
– a desire to learn about and further the work of ANH@E and time to do this.
– time to participate in monthly COM meetings (about two hours).
– willingness to support staff and volunteers with skills and advice where required
– desire to be part of a team in a respectful and supportive environment

No specialist skills are required but financial or legal skills would be welcomed. Please consider becoming a member of ANH@E’s Committee of Management – it is fun, rewarding and gives you new skills and experience in a dynamic and supportive environment while you make a great contribution to your community. The Committee of Management is responsible for the governance of ANH@E, ensuring that our organisation meets all legal requirements and remains accountable to funders, stakeholders and the community.
