About the role

Applications Open to join The SUBSTATION Committee of Management

The SUBSTATION is seeking two new members to join our Committee of Management with legal and human resource/industrial relations skills and professional experience. As volunteer members of the organisation, applications are open to candidates who have industry skills and expertise in these fields with an interest in not for profit or arts and culture fields. Applications are encouraged from people who have an interest in contemporary art practice, artist and audience development, local engagement and have an understanding of The SUBSTATION, its program of work and history. Successful applicants will support and promote the work and vision of The SUBSTATION while being bound by the code of conduct and policies and procedures of the organisation. These roles are voluntary per the constitution of the organisation, and the Committee of Management meets every six weeks. Attendance at exhibitions and performances is highly encouraged.

There are two volunteer positions open for applications for people who have industry experience and skills in:

Legal Expertise

Applicants should have professional experience working in the legal industry and knowledge of the not for profit environment. Understanding and experience of working or volunteering within the arts and culture sector are highly valued. Candidates should have professional experience and practical knowledge of copyright, moral rights, trademarks, business names and structures, defamation, insurance and contracting.

Human Resource Management/Industrial Relations

Applicants should have professional experience working with regulation and negotiation of employment within a not for profit or arts and cultural context. Candidates should have professional experience and practical knowledge of HRM and IR as it applies to organisations, workplace relations, organisational change and public policy.

The SUBSTATION is a multi-art space presenting a curated program of contemporary work by local, national and international artists. The SUBSTATION’s 100-year-old repurposed, industrial building houses a visual arts gallery, rehearsal studio and large- scale multi-use performance space. Engaging with artists from across artistic disciplines, working in non-traditional modes, we commission and curate our program to create opportunities for audiences in Hobsons Bay and the greater west of Melbourne to see the best of contemporary arts. We aim to engage local audiences in an inspired, critical dialogue about current society.
