About the role

About the Role
The Detention Rights Advocacy Program(DRAP) Casework Volunteer will be an integral part of the DRAP alongside senior casework staff. You will work to support vulnerable people seeking asylum and refugees currently held in PNG and Nauru. You will provide emotional support, complete welfare checks and risk assessments, complete referrals to legal advocacy services and counselling services, and advocate for our client’s rights in detention.

Program: Detention Rights Advocacy Program (DRAP)
The DRAP program focuses on individual and systemic advocacy for people in detention. This includes individual intervention, referral and support, private and public advocacy strategies for groups and individuals, dealing with media requests, highlighting conditions of detention (onshore and offshore), assistance with complaints to human rights and other complaints bodies and support for strategic litigation.

Key Responsibilities
● Provide short intervention support by phone to vulnerable clients offshore.
● Conduct risk assessments, welfare checks, crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
● Provide information and make referrals for medical advocacy, legal advocacy or counseling support.
● Ensure notes, data collection and other documentation and files are up to date.
● Assist with the drafting and preparation of medical evacuation briefs and risk notifications.
● Provide support to clients through our triage support service
● Other administrative duties as required.

Volunteer shifts
We are looking for a commitment of 12 months. Minimum one shift per week 10am-5pm and Shift are available only on Wednesdays or Fridays.

What we’re looking for
Essential
● Essential Demonstrated experience working in client facing roles in social welfare.
● Tertiary qualification or final year of study in social work, psychology, welfare or related discipline.
● Demonstrated experience in risk assessment with high risk clients.
● Excellent written communication skills with demonstrated experience in report writing and case noting
● Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Desirable
● Demonstrated experience in suicide intervention
● Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
● Experience working with survivors of torture and trauma.
