About the role
Vocational college Instituto Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora (IFMA), located in Venilale in the district of Baucau, requires a volunteer doctor to strengthen the capacity of its clinic, which serves the people of Venilale and surrounding communities.
Due to the physical isolation of Baucau, access to healthcare and resources is limited. The volunteer Doctor will provide the opportunity for students and locals to access a level of healthcare that their physical location might otherwise prohibit them from.
The volunteer Doctor will also assist to develop the skills of other clinic staff. After spending some time becoming aware of the health and living circumstances of the community, the volunteer will be expected to educate locals and students on how to manage their own health to the best of their ability.
The volunteer will contribute to:
- Addressing health-related poverty in a remote region of Timor-Leste;
- Enabling people to detect and act on symptoms of illness;
- Developing clinic processes and staff skills;
- Improved access to healthcare for the Venilale community and those who visit the clinic from surrounding villages.
The doctor working at the IFMA clinic will also work alongside and share skills with the doctors at the Government clinic. Sharing health knowledge with other local doctors adds to the sustainability of providing health education in the community.
