About the role

Good On You
Good On You helps shoppers make choices that are better for people, the planet and animals.

Good On You rates thousands of clothing, lifestyle, and beauty labels based on the ethics behind their production process.

We make this information as accessible to shoppers as possible through tools like the Good On You Ethical Shopping App goodonyou.org.au/app.

These tools make it easy for shoppers to buy from companies that align with their ethics and values. We aim to help millions of people avoid indirectly causing harm when they buy products.

Keen to help us?
Are you passionate about sustainability, fair trade and/or animal welfare? Looking for a flexible way to contribute?

We are looking for volunteer researchers to help us increase the information available to consumers about the ethical performance of brands.

As well as contributing to a great project, this opportunity will provide successful applicants with valuable research experience and formal recognition of your contribution.

Ethical Detectives – the Role
As an Ethical Detective, you will sort the good guys from the baddies to rate brands and products against specified criteria.

You’ll research and rate brands according to criteria developed by us in conjunction with reliable expert sources. Once you are confident with the rating process, you will transition to verifying brands by looking over the information provided by other ethical detectives.

Key attributes for the role:
– Good research skills and attention to detail
– Able to analyse information
– Able to learn new processes
– Able to write succintly and accurately
– An interest in ethical consumption and sustainability

Who will you work with?
The Good On You team is made up of six staff, plus volunteers and interns working in our Sydney CBD office.

A further 30 people have signed up to help rate brands as Ethical Detectives online. We’re a passionate team with extensive experience in the consumer movement, not for profit sector, business, software engineering and media.

The Rewards
Volunteering on this project is a flexible, convenient way to take action on issues you care about. You will contribute to building a valuable tool to help people better align their purchases with their values.

You’ll be making a unique contribution to sustainability, and your work could potentially influence thousands of consumers to make better purchasing decisions. This will ultimately place pressure on brands to change the way they operate. It will also help you develop new skills.

About you
You’re someone who cares about the ethics of consumer brands! Good On You is concerned with a wide range of issues, from workers’ rights, fair trade and child labour through to animal welfare, climate change and sustainability. Knowledge of one or more of these issues could help you during the process, but the key skills are attention to detail and comfort undertaking online research.

Why is this important?
Our goal is to make ethical shopping as easy as ‘regular’ shopping, and for millions of Australians to avoid environmental degradation, unfair and unsafe working conditions and harm to animals when they make everyday consumer decisions.

Who are we?
Good On You is a project of Ethical Consumers Australia, a not for profit organisation that aims to make it easy for people to make consumer choices that match their values.

We also publish the Good On You blog and eNewsletter, which gives weekly tips and advice on ethical fashion, sustainable living and updates on brand ratings. You can sign up here: goodonyou.org.au/blog.
