Organisation : Combined WA Community Gardens working group

Location : Australia (North Perth)

Time required : 6 hours per week

Duration of project : 20 weeks

Sector : Community Development

About the role

The position is new and will be controlled by a “working group”.
The aim is to bring to fruition a conference and forum (with expo) of WA based ‘Community Gardens’.

CG’s have been independently setup or even state funded in recent years to be setup in localities both urban and regional. There are many and they all vary depending on the community that hosts them. They all have different functions to fulfil, some have technical gardening, some have environmental based learning, some have recreational and hobby based activities for children or the aged, and some even have a teaching capacity based on an order of the courts.

There is some funding available. New applications for funding will be made through the working group. This project is well regarded and it is thought funding applications will be considered favourably.

The event is a first of its kind and has come about due to the disparate nature of CG groups getting set up all over the place but the wheel keeps being reinvented.

The state dept that funded the program over 4 years wants the CG’s that are also social hubs within communities, to be sustainable with a network of help. There is a CG website that will be reinvigorated and monitored in the long term to provide IT support for the network.

The position has scope to be inventive and of lateral thought.

There has been considerable thought already gone into the conference day, the make up of the day, the “breakout’ sessions and even the issue of having the expo.
There will be considerable media attention and certain media personalities will be invited onto the working group.
