About the organisation

Organisation name : Food Plant Solutions Rotary Action Group

Formed in 2007, Food Plant Solutions Rotary Action Group (FPS) creates educational materials that:

  • Identify highly nutritious local food plants
  • Explains how to grow them in a sustainable, agro-ecological way
  • Displays their nutritional values
  • And, describes why human bodies require those nutrients.

The materials allows people to better understand the importance of their local food plants; specifically their nutritional content and how to grow and use them.  By identifying a range of highly nutritious local food plants with differing seasonal requirements and maturities, it helps to ensure continuous, nutritious, sustainable food supply.  Local food plants are important because they are adapted to their environment, have sound nutritional density, a natural resistance to pest and disease and functional food benefits.

The source of our information is the Edible Plants of the World database, created by Tasmanian agricultural scientist, Bruce French.  This database is the largest of its kind in the world and currently has over 32,000 edible food plants for all countries.  Food Plant Solutions are specialists at extracting information from this database, and presenting the science based information in a range of easy to read formats, dependent upon the audience.

Food Plant Solutions does not send people in-country, but form partnerships with existing providers who use our materials to empower communities on the importance of their local foods.  This sustainably addresses malnutrition and food security, and is very cost effective.

And why do we exist?  Because nutrition-related factors contribute to about 45% of deaths in children under-5 years of age, which equates to 2.34 million children in 2019 (WHO estimates)
