About the role

Help newly-arrived migrants and refugees learn English and be a part of Australia’s largest and oldest language teaching program for adult migrants. AMEP Volunteer Tutor Scheme needs your support to provide one on one tuition to newly arrived migrants and refugees. Give an hour every week and help Australia develop stronger communities.

Our contract regions are Western Melbourne (Wyndham, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Melton city councils), Barwon (Geelong) and Ballarat regions. Tutors are required to meet with students 1 hour per week in their home or the local library to teach conversational English.

The people needing in-home or local library tutoring in English are the most isolated in our communities; they often cannot go to English classes because they have small children, are carers, have disabilities or they are unwell and elderly.

We match tutors with students close by their home or workplace. We take into account tutors’ preferences in relation to the location, cultural background, gender and skill level while being matched with students.

Other benefits of being a volunteer tutor include:

  1. Enhancing employability skills (punctuality, reliability, preparation)

  2. Enhancing resumes with volunteer work

  3. Gaining a referee for any jobs you are applying for

  4. Gaining experience in the community development and teaching sectors

  5. Learning about other cultures

  6. Developing interpersonal skills

  7. Giving back to the community

  8. Feeling good about helping someone!

We organize a police check, working with children check, training and support. We also complete occupational health and safety checks of the students’ homes.

Please contact us via email to be invited to an induction.
