About the role

Unique opportunity for accountant (CPA – or equivalent) to gain international experience and insights with this pioneering community project for 6-8 weeks.

Based in the vibrant city of Nairobi with a thriving cultural and food scene, our partner is the first organisation of its kind making headway in offering support and empowering LGBTIQ individuals in Kenya. Due to the nature of their work, it is imperative that they have a strong functioning accounting system, and have requested the support of a pro bono accountant (CIMA/ACCA/CPA or equivalent) in establishing internal controls and financial management tools.

Until recently they have been receiving and managing funds through a fiscal host. Their issues in finance have stemmed from the historical set up and transition of managing funds through a fiscal host and therefore not needing dedicated finance staff, to managing the funds themselves.

The request for volunteer came shortly after their accountant resigned from the organisation, and with the remaining staff having very limited understanding of accounting & financial matters, the organisation has found itself to be in a vulnerable position. They do have some basic controls in place; however, do not do bank and cash reconciliations, produce management accounts, or monthly reports.

Your Role

The organisation have therefore reached out to AfID to request the help of the pro bono Accountant to undertake a thorough assessment of their accounting and financial management controls and procedures. They would like the pro bono accountant to make and implement recommendations for best practice, and create a sound accounting and financial management system that considers the complexity of their accounting, the resources available to them and skillset of the local staff.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant to get involved in all aspects of accounting and finance for a young charity, and shape its finance function.
