About the role

We are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic and inspiring person to join our Education & Outreach Team, as a Marine Champions Youth Leader.

Overview

Marine Champions program Leader
Develop and deliver education material, coordinate program dates and locations, engage new participants
16 hours/week, 12-month contract, flexible workdays
Based in Mentone, Melbourne, travel to East Gippsland involved (with remote work considered)

The Program

The Marine Champions program is designed for young people to share their passion for marine mammals, conservation, and the environment. Through unique education opportunities, learning experiences and hands-on action, participants are given the knowledge and tools to gain a stronger understanding of marine science and sustainability.

The Marine Champions program is run in two cohorts; the Port Phillip Bay region and the Gippsland Lakes region. The program provides young people with the opportunity to meet, work and share experiences with people of all ages, while also having the opportunity to extend their knowledge in marine science, sustainability and conservation action. Participation is membership-based and incorporates school holiday programs at each location, as well as periodical in-term activities.

The Opportunity

This role will involve the creation and delivery of engaging marine environment education material and the coordination of program logistics. You will be required to develop session plans and content for all school-holiday workshops and in-term activities, for both the Port Phillip and Gippsland cohorts, devise appropriate practical activities to accompany the workshop content, and deliver these sessions in an engaging, relaxed classroom-style format. This will involve travel and overnight accommodation in East Gippsland (Paynesville/Lakes Entrance). You will also contribute to sourcing and booking program venues, communicating program details to participants and their families, advertising to and processing new applicants, budgeting program expenses, and applying for grants to fund program works. This will all involve working closely with other Marine Champions Leaders and MMF staff.

Requirements

– Passion for conservation, environment, community engagement
– Tertiary qualification (completed or underway) in science and/or education
– Experience in working with and educating young people
– Willingness to work extended hours when required 
– Willingness to travel to program locations, including overnight where necessary
– Creativity, team working skills, excellent communication skills (verbal and written), excellent organisational skills
– Working With Children’s Check
– First Aid training
