About the role

Want to expand your practice of medicine beyond your everyday experience?

Australian Doctors International (ADI) demonstrates its commitment to upholding the universal right to health care by working with local partners to provide and strengthen health services in rural and remote communities in Papua New Guinea.

We are seeking Volunteer Medical Officers to our projects for a 3-6 month deployment starting from late January 2019.

The Volunteer Medical Officer is responsible for providing medical treatment, staff education and outreach support. The Volunteer Medical Officer works as part of a multidisciplinary team providing clinical and preventative healthcare services across remote health centres and aid posts. The patrols are conducted by boat or four-wheel drive and last up to two weeks staying in local guest houses, villages and health facilities. The primary focus for the ADI Medical Officer is to build the clinical capacity of rural health workers through case-based and group training whilst on patrol.

In this role you’ll have the opportunity to improve the quality of health care in low resource settings while testing the limits of your own training. You don’t have to be an expert in tropical medicine, just the interest to operate outside of your standard practice. You’ll have the support of the local PNG health teams while on patrol and the ADI head office during your placement.

With your help we can achieve great outcomes for our neighbours in PNG. Take the step to explore this career opportunity and where this adventure can take you.

Required skills & competence:

  • Minimum four (4) years post-graduate experience, including primary health care experience
  • Minimum MBBS (Australia) or equivalent from New Zealand, PNG, UK, Ireland, Canada or Singapore
  • Current national medical registration

Preferred

  • Current resident of Australia
  • Experience providing medical services in remote and rural areas
  • Experience in clinical teaching and/or mentoring

ADI provides a monthly living allowance, food allowance, housing, airfares and other travel expenses.
