About the role

Do you have a Medium Rigid or Heavy Rigid Motor Vehicle driver’s license and a desire to support the dignity of homeless people in Northern Brisbane by providing access to hot showers, laundry facilities and professional services to overcome homelessness?

We need volunteers to drive a shower and laundry vehicle to and from the different service sites, ensure it is set up safely with the equipment ready to use by service users, and then pack up ready for the next day’s operations.

The Stand Up, Step Out service provides a mobile showering and laundry service within the Brisbane North region between Zillmere and Aspley in the south, Lawnton in the north and across to Sandgate and Brighton in the east.

Complementing existing place based services and community centres, SUSO supports those experiencing homelessness by providing showering and laundry facilities, as well as homelessness and mental health case worker services that instil dignity whilst also breaking the cycle of homelessness and poor health.

The primary purpose of this role is to collect and drive the vehicle from its stabling point to pre-determined locations within the service region where the volunteer will ensure the vehicle is parked safely and legally, allowing suitable access to service users.

The volunteer will also be responsible for overseeing the technical operation of the vehicle services, i.e. heating, showering and laundry, as well as managing the filling of water tanks and draining of greywater. Volunteers need a current Heavy Rigid Driver’s license. This role could suit part time or shift workers, retired bus or truck drivers, and or people who have recently passed their HR license and want a bit more practical experience for their resume. Footprints is a Centrelink-approved volunteer organisation.
