About the role
Family violence continues to be an issue across Australia, with adults and children escaping violence and coercive control each day. This is often a complex issue that spans across all sectors of our society, and we need your help.
Refuge Victoria (currently rebranding from Safe Futures Foundation) is the largest provider of family violence refuge accommodation in Victoria. It is our mission to help people escaping family violence on their journey to safety with individualised support and crisis accommodation.
We are currently looking for two new volunteer Board Directors to join us. You may join for a term of up to three years, with an option to extend for a further three. The role carries the expectations of a NFP Board Director in providing strategic direction, oversight, and working with the CEO to implement the organisation’s strategic objectives. The board is keen to hear from people who can bring depth of experience in any of the following areas:
- People and culture specialist
- Accounting / finance specialist
- Experience in the community services sector is desired but not essential
- Experience in board governance or board committees is also desirable but not essential.
We welcome applications from community members with sound judgement and integrity who share our vision for people escaping family violence to live safe and free. We value diversity of thought and experience and believe that our inclusive and collaborative culture contributes to our success.
The Refuge Victoria Board meets monthly in the evenings on the fourth Monday of the month – January to November. Board members are expected to serve on board sub committees and ad hoc working groups from time to time, which meet on an as-required basis. Whilst we are currently meeting virtually, you should be able to attend meetings in Croydon each alternate month, as government restrictions allow.
About the organisation
Refuge Victoria is an independent not-for-profit organisation that provides refuge and support to people who are experiencing homelessness from the impacts of family violence. We provide refuge and crisis accommodation along with a range of supports to enhance our client’s safety and wellbeing and work with them to achieve their goals towards a safer and better life.
Refuge Victoria is primarily funded by the Victorian Government. We operate 3 refuge facilities and 15 crisis properties situated throughout Victoria and our partnerships with Community Housing Ltd and EastCare provide nomination rights to a further 35 transitional homes.
Safe Futures Foundation underwent a rebranding in mid-2021 and changed its name to Refuge Victoria to reflect the nature of the organisation’s core purpose and service. We are proud of our grassroots history dating back to 1976 when our first refuge was established by community members and volunteers who knew there were women and children in our suburbs who were unsafe in their homes and needed a safe place to stay. Over time, four refuges were established and they merged to form Safe Futures Foundation in 2012.
