About the organisation
Organisation name : BrainSTEM Ltd.
Since its inception in 2016, BrainSTEM has delivered fourteen 12-week team-based STEM mentoring programs through >45 mentors from academia and industry. Over 600 high school students (67% girls and 55% students from under-represented backgrounds) benefited from receiving in excess of 5000 hours of mentoring. Recognised as influential in closing the STEM gender gap, BrainSTEM (in partnership with five leading universities and organisations including The University of Canberra, The University of Melbourne and the Australian & New Zealand Society of Biomechanics) was awarded a 2021 Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship grant supported by Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources to run a national mentoring program for girls from under-represented backgrounds.
As a young forward-thinking non-profit organisation, I have continually developed and innovated BrainSTEM’s mentoring program. Specialised coaching workshops for mentors, design thinking and problem solving mini-workshops for high-school students have resulted in an increased interest in STEM engagement. Observing first-hand the benefits of mentoring and the transformational outcomes it delivers, the need for a research led, targeted and scalable mentoring methodology is crucial for Australia’s future.
