Location : International

Time required : Full time

Duration of project : 6 Months

Sector : Community Development, Education & Training, Employment Services

About the role

Based in Myanmar’s largest city and most important commercial centre Yangon, our partner is a socially-focused microfinance institution. The organisation helps small business owners create or develop small businesses with affordable credit. They are looking for a Pro Bono Accountant to support their Risk and Compliance Management Department.

The organisation has 45 branches and 38 service centres located in key rural areas. Client funds have been used for local projects including constructing schools, building roads and supporting healthcare. As loans are paid back, others in the community can benefit from further loans.

Our partner would like the support of a Pro Bono Accountant to help them undertake a review of the organisation and add value to the current risk and compliance function of this fast-growing organisation. In the absence of an immediate line manager, the Risk and Compliance Team of two will report to the Pro Bono Accountant, while they recruit for someone suitable.

As the first AfID Pro Bono Accountant on assignment your role will start with an assessment of their accounting & financial management systems, making and implementing recommendations on best practice based on the complexity of their finances, the resources available to the organisation and skillset of the local staff.

You will also:

1. Refine the existing risk management tools
2. Refine and develop existing compliance tools
3. Build the capacity of staff from Risk & Compliance Management Department

This voluntary assignment is a unique opportunity to apply your professional skills in an international development setting, significantly contribute to the support and development of local staff and have a lasting impact. If you are an experienced qualified accountant, looking to make a difference and gain relevant international experience to help you transition into the sector, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
