About the role
We are seeking a person who would like to accept the role of volunteer Treasurer on our board with the below skills, qualifications and attributes, who is able to attend monthly meetings at our premises in Turramurra. Meetings are generally 2nd Wednesday at 3pm and run for 2-3 hrs. The Treasurer has additional duties of liaising with the General Manager and team (including the employee bookkeeper), to assist them if needed. Our financial accounts are audited annually and experience in liaising with an appointed auditor is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a Board Member of HKCT, you will be expected to participate in:
- constructively challenging and helping to develop proposals on strategy of HKCT;
- setting values and standards for HKCT and establishing systems for their communication and monitoring;
- monitoring the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to enable HKCT to meet those goals and objectives;
- satisfying yourself as to the adequacy and integrity of financial and other reporting to the board and members and that there are adequate systems of internal control; and
- satisfying yourself that systems for identification and management of risks are robust and appropriate.
HKCT is providing care and services to people who are older, who may have a disability and may be vulnerable. Therefore, your duty and responsibility extends to the quality of service that HKCT clients receive. Your role as part of the board therefore includes assessing the extent to which clients feel they are being supported to the extent that they expect, that services and supports meet quality standards and that clients are being treated in accord with the values of the organisation
As a member of the board of a charity registered with the ACNC, you have duties and responsibilities that come with your role. We have provided a summary of those below and refer you to the guidance documents available from the ACNC. You may also have other obligations and duties to other government agencies or under other laws, including as required under the Associations Incorporation Act, Fair Work Act, Work Health and Safety Act, Aged Care Quality Standards and Charitable Fundraising Acts.
The ACNC governance standards set core, minimum governance standards that all charities must meet. Governance standard five requires that charities take reasonable steps to make sure that the members of their governing body know and understand their legal duties and carry out their duties. These duties generally require you to be careful and conscientious in your role and to act with common sense and integrity.
Knowing and carrying out your duties as a Board Member helps HKCT to carry out its charitable purpose and protects its resources against misuse. You can find more information about the duties of those who manage charities on the ACNC’s website (www.acnc.gov.au) or in the ACNC’s guide Governance for good.

Through these activities we aim to improve the physical and mental health of our clients and reduce the likelihood of their premature admission to long-term residential care. Transport also allows our clients to build & sustain community participation, access other services and socialise.
HKCT currently has a fleet of 13 vehicles and 30 employees led by a General Manager and is government funded, primarily as part of the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) under contract with Transport for NSW.
