About the role

Unique opportunity for an adventurous accountant (CPA- or equivalent) looking to gain international experience, work with inspiring people and support education in Malawi.

Are you an accounting professional looking to use your skills and experience to give something back to society and those less fortunate around the world? Perhaps swap London for Laos, Melbourne for Malawi or Boston for Belize!? Accounting for International Development (AfID) offers every type of accountant, from anywhere in the world, the opportunity to use their skills to support a broad range of non-profits globally. Volunteer Assignments from 2 weeks to 12 months form part of our ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity of organisations in more than 50 countries.

Our partner is a youth-led NGO working in the rural Northern Malawian districts of Chitipa and Rumphi. They use a grass root, community engagement model to tackle issues affecting health, environment and education. They aim to create empowered communities which can influence rural development and where vulnerable and disadvantaged groups can thrive.

Their projects address the following issues/risks including poor attendance of girls in schools – their Keeping Girls Safe in School project creates adequate bathroom and changing rooms for girls in schools, provides reusable sanitary pads, holds engagement meetings with parent and teacher groups and educates on girls’ rights.

Your Role

You will be the second AfID volunteer to support this community-based organisation. You will be reviewing their progress since the last volunteer’s placement in implementing and maintaining her recommendations including reviewing compliance with the procedures manual and ensuring accounts and reporting are being kept up to date. They are keen to try QuickBooks and you will be helping prepare them for this transition.

This broad and wide-ranging assignment is a great opportunity for accountants thinking about a career move to the international development sector to get an extensive insight in just a couple of months.
