Expressions of interest are sought for membership to The University of Melbourne’s Animal Ethics Committees.
The University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, learning and teaching, and engagement.
As part of its many programmes, the University uses animals for various scientific purposes, including medical research, teaching, veterinary diagnosis, ecology & conservation, and agriculture & environmental studies.
Through its Animal Ethics Committees (AECs), the University strives to uphold best practice in animal-based science, while reflecting the expectations of the broader community.
The AECs are responsible for the ethical review and approval of all research and teaching activities involving animals at the University. They operate to ensure that all such activities are conducted in compliance with the current edition of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (2013), and in a scientific and ethical manner, with the welfare of the animals involved as their focus.
The University’s AECs are constituted according to the guidelines of the aforementioned Code, with each AEC comprised of members from four categories, to ensure that the proposed work is assessed in a thorough and well-rounded way. The Categories of membership are:
· Category A – Veterinarian
· Category B – Scientist
· Category C – Animal Welfare representative
· Category D – Layperson/Community representative
The University of Melbourne is currently seeking expressions of interest from people interested in joining one of its four Animal Ethics Committees in the capacity of:
· Category A – Veterinarian
