About the role
About us
A Drop in the Ocean’s purpose is to provide immediate and direct aid to refugees. This is done by coordinating volunteers to travel to our destinations in Greece. Aid workers assist with providing services and activities in the camps and in our community centres. The tasks are constantly changing, depending on the needs of the various destinations. We currently operate in four locations around Greece, running projects and services both in and around refugee camps. A Drop in the Ocean was founded in September 2015, and has since then organised more than 5500 volunteers to go to Greece, where the need for help is high.
We are looking for volunteers at our sites across Greece to help refugees this winter (November-January). A Drop in the Ocean is currently located in Skaramagas and Elefsina camps in Athens, in Nea Kavala camp in Northern Greece, on Lesvos, and on Samos.
The range of services we provide varies from site to site, but some of your daily tasks may include:
- Clothing or food distribution
- Leading psychosocial activities such as chess club or art class
- Kids activities and helping children to learn through play
- Teaching English to children or adults
- Women’s space
- Warehouse sorting
- Bike rental and repair
- Laundry service
- Sewing room
- Build and repair workshop
- Collaboration with other NGOs
- Working with unaccompanied minors inside Moria camp
All of our operations are led by experienced coordinators who maintain safe, sustainable projects and services. We do not require volunteers to have any special knowledge as most of our activities are designed to be run by volunteers with general skills.
We welcome applications from individuals with specialist skills that relate one of the above activities. We are particularly interested to hear from individuals with a TEFL qualification or social work/childcare background.
Please note that we have a lower age limit of 25 years (people between 23 and 25 can still apply, but they must undergo an interview prior to being accepted). The minimum time commitment is 10 full working days, except for Samos where we require minimum 3 weeks commitment. Volunteers working in Lesvos and Nea Kavala will need an international driving licence, or be willing to share the cost of a car with other volunteers.
