About the role

Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) is looking for volunteer Champions to lead engagement in Zero Carbon Communities. A Zero Carbon Community is any community where people, businesses, clubs, groups and councils are taking action to reduce carbon emissions.

Each Champion will help a Zero Carbon Community as part of an 3 month accelerator program. You will organise and undertake engagement activities, including attending community events and festivals, helping to host BZE project launches, meeting with stakeholders to promote and explain BZE research and projects.

We’re looking for Champions with the following skills and experience:

  • an interest in climate change solutions
  • technical expertise is a bonus, but – more importantly – we’re seeking Champions who are excellent at building community relationships and helping to inspire and motivate others
  • project management and logistical experience

Champions may live within the Zero Carbon Community, or can volunteer to assist a ZCC remotely by volunteering from home via phone / online meetings. Our first planned ZCC locations are at Apollo Bay, Toowoomba, Indigo, Tweed and Newcastle – please do apply if you’re interested: projects can be done remotely and we will be adding more locations through the year.

We expect each Champion to commit a day (or equivalent) per week over three months from April to June. There are options to continue engagement after that based on mutual agreement between the volunteer and BZE. Support for the Champions is provided by the ZCC Manager and BZE CEO.

What you’ll get out of it:

  • Be part of a community of like-minded people committed to creating positive change
  • Grow or extend your practical experience in like running meetings and managing communications
  • Build your skills in community management, leadership and governance
  • Develop or extend your knowledge about environmental sustainability and ways to achieve a zero carbon status
  • Enjoy being part of a supported team of volunteers
