About the role

Introduction

The Invasive Species Council is seeking the support of a suitably skilled individual to review the board’s membership and assist in the recruitment of new board members. ISC is unable to pay commercial rates for this consultancy and is therefore seeking pro bono or heavily discounted support.

Background

The Invasive Species Council is an environmental organisation founded in 2002 to provide a specialist policy and advocacy focus on reducing the threat of invasive species that threaten the environment. Despite invasive species being consistently ranked as one of the top three threats to biodiversity and the major cause of extinctions of Australian animals, no other environmental organisation in Australia has a strong focus in this area.

ISC has made significant progress over recent years. A focus on strategic planning, fundraising and capacity building has resulted in an organisation that delivers on its advocacy and outreach goals and consists of five part-time staff / contractors. The latest strategic plan can be found here.

Need for a board review

Currently the Vice President position and one ordinary member are vacant. Later in the year, the ISC board is likely to have further vacancies. The current President of three years has indicated a desire to step down later this year. As a result there is a need to find four new board members. This is an exciting opportunity to recruit people who will support the further development and growth of the organisation.

Key tasks for the board reviewer

  • Interview current board members to ascertain the skills they bring to the board and their intentions regarding future membership;
  • Interview the CEO;
  • Make recommendations to the board about the types of people and skills which would benefit the future direction of the organisation and a strategy to reach out to potential board members;
  • Support the President and CEO to reach out to potential board members.

While board members are located in Melbourne and the CEO is located in Sydney, proposals from individuals located elsewhere in Australia would be considered.

Timing

ISC is aiming to have this work completed in time to nominate new members at the AGM in September / October 2017.

Proposals

ISC welcomes brief written proposals outlining how the consultancy will be undertaken. The deadline for proposals is 5pm Mon 10 July 2017. Email proposals to Esther Abram on esther68@bigpond.com.
