Our Purpose: We build awareness and understanding of autism. We develop community capacity by working with others to help them value and support people on the autism spectrum and their families. Outcomes to be achieved by 2040: 1) Community awareness and understanding of autism in Victoria increases over time; 2) Attitudes and behaviours towards people on the autism spectrum by the Victorian community (government, private and social sectors) improves over time; 3) Opportunities for meaningful participation and a valued contribution increase for people on the autism spectrum. Strategic Activities: Build awareness and increase understanding of autism through media activity to promote facts and dispel myths, World Autism Awareness Day, provision of information and resources. Advocate for positive change through quality, evidence based advice to governments and other organisations on critical issues for autistic people including early identification and assessment, NDIS, education, employment, mental health, women & girls. Community engagement and capacity building through consultation with the autism community, improving knowledge, skills and capability of individuals and private, public and social organisations.

Amaze, the peak body for Autism in Victoria, has an exciting new opportunity to work with the Victorian autism community to build the capacity of autism support groups to enter the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Building on the successful work of Amaze over the past two years in building the capacity of 32 autism peer-groups to enter the NDIS, Amaze is expanding this work into upcoming NDIS roll out locations.

The role of the NDIS Community Engagement Officer is to work with existing or new autism peer-support groups, throughout Victoria, to strengthen their capacity to understand and prepare for the NDIS and other activities to maximise their independence, self-advocacy and community participation.

The successful candidate will identify and select suitable support groups/networks and work with members to build confidence and expertise, enabling them to achieve greater involvement with the autism community. They will also identify regions that are under-served and establish new groups/networks. They will develop resources and content to build capacity to increase individual’s choice and control of the services they access.

This project will help enable autistic people and their families to gain the knowledge and expertise to make their own choices about their lives, and help them access community support options and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

This role will act as the central coordinator for support groups and will help connect group members with local services, key community agencies and other partners.

Travel throughout Victoria will be required
