About the organisation
Plan International Australia is a member of a global federation and is a secular and independent development and humanitarian organisation. As one of the oldest, largest and most experienced organisations in our field we know that there is nowhere in the world where girls are treated as equals. We work alongside children, young people, supporters and partners to tackle root causes of the injustices facing girls and the most marginalised children.
We care deeply about what we do and are big-hearted about it. Our passion is to be positive, courageous, bold, forward-looking and supportive.
About the role
- Member of the Board of Directors
- One of the oldest and largest children’s development and humanitarian organisations
- Be part of a powerful global movement championing children’s rights & gender equality
Plan International Australia is looking for up to three new Directors and a potential Chairperson to replace the current Chair when his term expires. We are looking to recruit at this point in time because we have Directors completing their maximum terms. In our experience it is better for new Directors to come on in a cohort so that they can learn and assist each other.
In particular we are looking for three suitable candidates with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- international development, humanitarian or DFAT experience;
- advertising, PR and/or brand background; and
- legal backgrounds or advocates with a commitment to child rights, human rights and gender equality. Experience in government relations a bonus.
Must be a leader in their field and have a demonstrated commitment to gender equality and human rights. GAICD preferred.
The ideal candidates will also be able to demonstrate a commitment to our values, have a good understanding of the challenges that face the for-purpose sector and a demonstrated commitment to supporting not-for profits at the highest level.
As a Board member, you will be responsible for supporting the organisation to develop and oversee implementation of our ambitious vision. You will contribute expertise and advice to the CEO and senior leadership team across matters including operations, finance and risk, challenges, governance, fundraising, communications and media, business and planning.
Plan International Australia is a company limited by guarantee. Board members need to meet all statutory obligations of company directors. The Board delegates all management responsibilities to the Chief Executive Officer, who has wide management authority, which is limited and guided by the organisation’s policies, the Board and sub-committees of the Board.
Plan International Australia’s Board meets five times a year plus sub-committee meetings in between. The role is a volunteer one, though costs of travel and accommodation to attend meetings – mostly held in Melbourne- are covered. Every three years the Board visits the work in the field as part of its governance oversight. A Director may be required to travel (expenses covered) to attend International meetings of the governance body twice a year.
For more information about the role and function of the Board please see the supporting materials attached. If this role resonates with you, and you have the skills and experience that we need please follow the instructions to apply.
