About the organisation

Organisation Name : Per Capita Australia

Per Capita is an independent progressive think tank, dedicated to fighting inequality in Australia. We work to build a new vision for Australia based on fairness, shared prosperity, community and social justice.

Our research is rigorous, evidence-based and long-term in its outlook. We consider the national challenges of the next decade rather than the next election cycle. We ask original questions and offer fresh solutions, drawing on new thinking in social science, economics and public policy.

Per Capita’s operating model is to invest in highly qualified researchers who work on applied policy development, rather than the more abstract, theoretical approaches of academia.

Our audience is the interested public, not just experts and policy makers. We engage all Australians who want to see rigorous thinking and evidence-based analysis applied to the issues facing our country’s future.

About the role

Per Capita, one of Australia’s leading progressive think tanks, is seeking a talented researcher to join our team in Melbourne. The role will suit an early career researcher of any age, with qualifications in sociology, economics, public policy, humanities or a related social science degree.

The role includes undertaking quantitative and qualitative research on a range of social and economic policy issues, including social security, the tax and transfer system, housing policy, ageing, gender equity, industrial relations, industry policy and the future of work. Expertise in one or more area is not required, but will be viewed favourably.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and Per Capita’s team of research economists, fellows and social innovation practitioners to develop policy papers and articles that contribute to our mission to fight inequality in Australia.

You will be a creative and collaborative person, with a commitment to social justice and social democratic politics. You will possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, an understanding of the Australian political system, and the ability to work to often tight and competing deadlines.

Previous work experience within the social services sector or labour movement will be highly regarded. Some familiarity with data analysis tools is necessary.

First Nations people, people from CALD and low socio-economic backgrounds and women are encouraged to apply.

The position is based in Melbourne, and offered on a part-time basis, with hours negotiable. Flexible working conditions, including work-from-home days, staggered start and finish times, and time-in-lieu for work outside standard hours, are available. A competitive salary will be provided, along with professional development opportunities.
