About the organisation
Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC) provides support to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds residing in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The region covers the Local Government Areas of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges. The MIC is governed by a Board of Directors.
The MIC’s objectives are:
- Provide poverty support and emergency relief programs to migrant families and individuals suffering financial crisis, destitution, misfortune, helplessness and sickness
- Deliver post arrival services relevant to new migrants and refugees in the Eastern Melbourne Region (the region) to ensure effective local settlement and orientation
- Enhance direct provision of settlement services to migrants in the region
- Provide a primary focus for settlement planning, coordination and delivery in the region, with the objective of ensuring effective and culturally sensitive service provision to migrants by mainstream agencies
- Enhance existing links with and between a range of service providing agencies in the region
- Identify service gaps and/or shortfalls in relation to migrants by mainstream agencies within the region and provide advice and assistance related to appropriate service delivery in the development of new, alternative or additional services for migrants to bridge gaps and shortfalls
- Assess duplication of service within all areas of migrant settlement and to facilitate an effective network grid for the minimisation of duplicate services
- Investigate technology-based solutions for the provision of information on services available within the region to the wider community
- Carry on any other activity, which in the opinion of the majority of the Board of Directors would comprise the spirit and intent of the Board
About the role
Background
The Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC) is seeking an experienced Project Worker to coordinate a new project responding to family violence amongst CALD communities residing in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
The program aims to address family violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, response and recovery by delivering family violence awareness raising and early intervention activities with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
Position Context
The Department of Premier & Cabinet has provided funding to the MIC under the Multicultural COVID-19 Family Violence Program. The program objectives are to:
- ensure multicultural community members at risk of, or experiencing, family violence are supported to access specialist family violence services through referral by multicultural, faith-based or ethno-specific organisations
- build the capability of ethno-specific, faith-based and multicultural organisations to identify and respond to family violence in line with the Victorian Government Family Violence Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM)
- build stronger partnerships between multicultural, faith-based and ethno-specific organisations and specialist family violence services, including inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence, to support stronger referral pathways and better support people experiencing family violence
- ensure multicultural communities are engaged in family violence awareness raising and prevention activities
Summary of Position
The position includes working alongside refugee and migrant community leaders and faith leaders to identify barriers to victim/survivors and those at risk of or experiencing family violence, seeking support and establishing appropriate and accessible referral pathways into support services.
The project worker will also provide information, short term support and referrals into specialist family violence services for people who present as a result of the interventions, as well as providing support to others who contact MIC seeking assistance with family violence related matters.
The project worker will be responsible for identifying training needs amongst MIC staff and community and faith leaders in identifying and responding to family violence and develop and deliver training as required.
