About the role

Kara House is currently seeking a support worker for our new 24-hour, high security refuge. The successful applicant will be mature, calm and proactive with a high awareness of risk management. Ideally this position will suit a new graduate aiming to gain experience, a student undertaking further studies or a person re-entering the workforce. 

The position requires a sleepover and weekend work on a rostered basis with all relevant conditions and penalties, according to the award. This will generally be 3-5  nights per week as well as weekend day work, with a 3-week rotating roster. Hours are 5.00pm- 9.00am, including a sleepover or 9.00am-5pm on weekends. Days to be decided in consultation with Management.

Additional duties, such as preparing client activities, setting up rooms, packing client requirements and other portfolio related activities will be required in the hours before and after the official sleepover and during weekend day shifts. A handover will be provided to the Support worker at the commencement of a shift and a corresponding handover will be provided by the Support worker to a Kara House specialist family violence practitioner at the conclusion of the shift. The support worker will be provided backup at all times.

Ideally the applicant will have some family violence experience although training will be provided. This is not a case management position and family violence support will be provided to residents of Kara House by specialist family violence practitioners.   

As this is a new position the duties may change over time.

Initial 1-year contract

All offers of employment are subject to a six-month probationary period

Mandatory requirements:

  • A tertiary qualification in Community Services or related discipline or participation in studies is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Working with Children Check
  • National Police Check (international police check if required)
  • Eligibility to work in Australia
  • Current unrestricted Victorian driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Fully vaccinated against Covid-19
