About the organisation

Organisation Name : RSL NSW via People for Purpose

RSL NSW has been respecting, supporting and remembering NSW veterans and their families for over 100 years.  The not-for-profit organisation was formed in 1917 and currently has over 27,000 members in 340 sub-Branches throughout New South Wales.  Incorporated under a NSW Act of Parliament, RSL NSW’s vision is that by 2026 every veteran in NSW knows what the RSL stands for, what it does, and wants to be involved as a member. Their motto is ‘One RSL—working together, delivering locally’.

Based in the heart of the Sydney CBD, the RSL NSW head office boasts a team of dynamic professionals and strong governance processes. The organisation’s current 2021-26 Strategic Plan was created with extensive consultation across the Veteran community, and key milestones are already being achieved. Transparency is a key element of the organisation’s approach.  A detailed implementation dashboard, a task update – and the Strategy itself – can be found on the RSL NSW website at www.rslnsw.org.au.

About the role

  • Be part of a respected organisation moving firmly into the future
  • Bring your strong governance and board experience
  • Contribute to implementing a solid, focussed Strategic Plan

To further position itself to deliver on the vision and to replace outgoing independent directors, the organisation seeks two independent non-executive directors to be appointed to the Board. That is, two non-elected roles for individuals who are not currently members of the Returned and Services League. Previous board experience and a commitment to good governance and transparency are essential.  Further to this, and to complement skills that already exist on the Board, RSL NSW is particularly looking for directors who will bring the following:

  • Executive level experience in public policy or advocacy (the areas of veterans services, aged care or mental health would be an advantage); and
  • Executive level experience in marketing, public relations, or fundraising

Active membership and graduates of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) or Governance Institute will be highly regarded. Board members will have a genuine interest and commitment to RSL NSW’s vision and purpose.  Additionally, it is expected that they will occasionally attend public functions as an advocate for RSL NSW. It is estimated that the role of independent director may take approximately 10 – 15 hours per month. The roles are not remunerated. Board and Committee meetings alternate between being held in person at ANZAC House in the Sydney CBD, or online.  The RSL NSW Board meets approximately six times a year and holds an annual strategy day.  All Board members are expected to participate in at least one Board Committee, with bi-monthly meetings.
