What is an Academic Coach?

Academic Coaches are volunteers on our platform that want to provide on-demand academic support to low-income high school students in the U.S.. You’ll work hands-on with students in UPchieve’s virtual classroom to help them improve their grades, increase their confidence, and prepare for college. You can help students move one step closer to achieving their academic goals without ever leaving your couch!

What is the time commitment?

There is no minimum time commitment to volunteer with UPchieve. The hours are highly flexible and there is no set schedule. If you have a busy week coming up, you can simply unselect all your availability on the schedule page or ignore that week’s requests. Most volunteers contribute on average just 30 minutes a week; others spend hours in a single day. This opportunity is perfect for individuals with busy lives that still want to volunteer and make an impact or for those who want to make a direct impact on students’ lives without leaving home

How does it work?

UPchieve tutoring sessions are done within our web app. It takes place in a virtual classroom that pairs one student with one volunteer. The virtual classroom includes a virtual whiteboard or document editor and text-based chat. You can learn more about the position here.

Who can be an Academic Coach?

Just about anyone! Our coaches include everyone from  high school and college students to busy professionals to  retirees. You do not need any prior tutoring experience—just an interest in helping students with their homework in writing, reading, math, science or more. We provide training and support to ensure you are prepared to help students in the subjects they request.
