Position Title:                           Youth Voice NT Project Officer

Position Purpose:                    Provide representation on behalf of the Northern Territory (NT)

social and community youth sector (the Sector) and young people to governments on issues affecting young people and the Sector across the NT.

Position Reports to:               Policy Manager

Position Location:                   Preferred location is Alice Springs; however, Darwin is a viable option for the successful candidate

Industrial Instrument:           The Fair Work Act 2009, Social, Community, Home Care and

Disability Services industry (SCHCADS) Award 2010 and the Northern Territory Council of Social Service Incorporated Enterprise Agreement 2017.

Salary:

Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry (SCHCADS) Award 2010 Social and Community Services Employees level 5

Above Award at $91,045 per annum

Other Basic Entitlements:

10% Superannuation paid to a fund of employee choice.

6 weeks annual leave at normal pay plus 17.5% leave loading.

Grace leave for the working days occurring between Christmas and New Year public holidays, at normal pay.

Background to the position

NTCOSS works in policy areas which impact on those in the Northern Territory (NT) who experience disadvantage and marginalisation. In lieu of a youth peak body in the NT, the Youth Voice NT project aims to provide united, independent and active advocacy for the non-government youth sector and young people while working to enhance positive community attitudes towards young people. The Project Officer will actively engage and consult with NTCOSS members, and provide research, strategic information and advice to facilitate appropriate policy response from NTCOSS by working with appropriate stakeholders and as directed by the Chief Executive Officer and Policy Manager.

Statement of Duties

1. Support and build the capacity of young people, including those in regional and remote centres in the NT, and the Youth Sector to participate and engage with NT and Australian Government in the development of strategies, policies and activities;

2. Assist in facilitating training, and identifying relevant forums and conferences for the youth sector;

3. Work with the Policy Manager in promoting and advocating on issues affecting young people and youth services;

4. Facilitate consultation and information sharing with young people, the Youth Sector, the community and the NT and Australian Government on issues impacting young people;

5. Attend youth networks and forums across the NT, to act as a conduit for information and opportunities across the NT, as well as from the Sector to governments;

6. Facilitate NT and national connections between young people and practitioners in the NT and policy makers and promote the rights and interests of young people in the NT;

7. Other related duties as required by the Policy Manager and

Position Attributes

1. Knowledge and understanding of the policies and issues impacting on the youth sector in the NT including knowledge of the diversity of young Aboriginal people, young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ young people, and young people with disability.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of key issues relating to young people, including the importance of lived experience and a commitment to the inclusion and participation of young people, in all aspects of community.
3. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field, such as youth work, social work, social science or
4. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences and prepare reports, submissions, and discussion papers in a timely
5. Demonstrated organisational and administrative skills, including excellent time management, planning skills and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a
6. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and collaborate effectively in partnerships with key stakeholders including young people, governments, social and community sector organisations, and Aboriginal controlled organisations.
7. Demonstrated commitment to social justice

9. A current NT Working with Children Card, a current NT driver licence and current COVID-19 vaccination status.

10. It would also be desirable to have experience working within the community sector in the NT, including working with Aboriginal controlled organisations.
