About the organisation
The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc. (also known as Foundation House) provides services to advance the health, wellbeing, and human rights of people of refugee backgrounds in Victoria who have experienced torture or other traumatic events in their country of origin or while fleeing those countries.
The organisation was established in Melbourne in 1987 and is non-denominational, politically neutral, and non-aligned. With over 200 staff, Foundation House is a state-wide agency offering services in metropolitan, regional and rural areas, with head office based in Brunswick and service sites in Dallas, Sunshine, Dandenong, and Ringwood.
About the role
The program
Foundation House works with primary and secondary schools to support staff in their work with students and families from refugee backgrounds. The Education Program develops and maintains relationships with teaching professionals whilst working collaboratively within existing program frameworks to implement capacity building and change processes. Our innovative online program resource, School’s In for Refugees supports schools and school-based professionals in their efforts to provide a high quality education to children and young people from refugee backgrounds. The role
School Support Officers develop and maintain relationships with teaching professionals and other school staff whilst working collaboratively within existing program frameworks to implement capacity building and change processes,this Includes:
- supporting school leaders to strengthen policies and programs to further support students and families of refugee backgrounds
- facilitating professional learning for teachers and other school staff
- conducting secondary consultations with school staff, and
- developing professional learning resources as required.
This is a part time, fixed term maternity leave backfill position available, initially until May 2023, with the possibility of extension.
About you
You have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by refugee background children and their families in primary and secondary school settings. You understand the role of capacity building and advocacy and are able to lead and motivate others to implement change. This role requires an understanding of the Victorian education system and experience in facilitating professional learning and project coordination with school communities
Salary and benefits
Remuneration is based on our Enterprise Agreement 2014 of $101,250 gross salary per annum (pro rata), plus 17.5% leave loading and 10.5% superannuation.
