The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc. (also known as Foundation House) provides services to advance the health, wellbeing, and human rights of people of refugee backgrounds in Victoria who have experienced torture or other traumatic events in their country of origin or while fleeing those countries.

The organisation was established in Melbourne in 1987 and is non-denominational, politically neutral, and non-aligned. With over 200 staff, Foundation House is a state-wide agency offering services in metropolitan, regional and rural areas, with head office based in Brunswick and service sites in Dallas, Sunshine, Dandenong, and Ringwood.

About the role

The project

The 12-month funded project under the Diverse Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Grants 2021-22, will focus on enhancing the capacity of refugee and asylum seeker communities and the service sector to promote and engage in Victoria’s mental health reforms and initiatives. The project will deliver services across communities and cross-regionally and will be integrated with the Victorian Refugee Health Network (VRHN).

The role

The Community Project Worker (CPW) will directly engage with refugee-background communities from Afghanistan to develop partnerships between VFST and these communities in response to mental health and wellbeing issues and the community’s interest in being involved in the Mental Health Reform Agenda.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with community members and leaders to develop opportunities about the needs and engagement of the community.
  • Identifying challenges within the refugee-background communities from Afghanistan around mental health and wellbeing issues.
  • Supporting the development of an Advisory Group of community leaders from refugee-background communities from Afghanistan to work in partnership with the Diverse Communities Project Team.
  • Contributing to the planning, evaluation and reporting of the Diverse Communities Project, Enhancing Capacity of Refugee and Asylum Seeker communities and Service Sector to Promote and Engage in Victoria’s Mental Health reforms and initiatives, to ensure delivery of program goals.

About you

With fluency in English and Dari, you are committed to human rights issues and social justice. You are able to work collaboratively with a broad range of people including your peers, community members, and external stakeholders. You have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as a member of the team.

Salary and benefits

Remuneration is based on our Enterprise Agreement 2014 of $92,773 gross salary per annum (pro-rata), plus 17.5% leave loading and 10.5% superannuation. Additional benefits include salary packaging up to $18,550, a range of flexible working options, a highly supportive team environment, excellent training and development opportunities, and onsite parking.
