About our Therapeutic Community
OHV’s adult residential rehabilitation program at Lower Plenty provides live-in treatment for individuals, couples and parents with their children (aged 0-12 years old). Operating as a therapeutic community, the values-based program provides a structured environment where up to 143 residents and 30 staff work together to help people make changes and choices on their pathway to recovery.
Part of the Therapeutic Community (TC), a long-term residential program, the onsite Children’s Centre forms part of the specialized Family Services Program, offering a unique play and learning environment for the development of children aged 0-5 years and providing additional programs for children aged 6-12 after school and on school holidays, working closely in supporting resident families. The Centre provides childcare experiences tailored to meet the needs of individual children. The Centre is open Monday to Friday, and assists in providing an environment that is secure, and nurturing, and will support the safety, social and emotional wellbeing and developmental needs, and protection of all children.
About the role
Childhood Social Worker Family Services
Full-time (1.0 FTE). Standard hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday
(to be able to support individual needs of families, there may be an occasional afternoon shift to support the dinner, bath and bed routine. Shift penalties will apply).

About this role
The key purpose of the role is to provide childcare and family support, through the lens of a social worker, meeting the needs of individual children in residence at the TC and supporting the parents in developing better parenting behaviours and maintaining daily routines for their children especially during meal times, bath time, and bed time.
Key areas of focus
- Utilise strength-based techniques for supporting parents in assisting children to manage their emotions and behaviour’s, assisting parents with daily living routines.
- Communicate with parents and Centre staff regarding the children, documenting and reporting observations as necessary.
- Alongside Children’s Centre Supervisor and Childhood Educator, incorporate tasks of assisting children in their daily activities and routines (e.g. meals, sleeping and cleaning up) WITHIN Childhood Family Facilitation activities
- Deliver therapeutic structured programs that are responsive to the changing needs of the children and enhance the individual developmental outcomes of each child.
- Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of quality assurance systems
A week in this role
If you were here last week you would have:
- Worked in the children centre with the children and staff to provide a safe learning environment for children aged 0 to 12 years.
- Met with the parents and provided a strengths-based approach to modelling, learning and building parenting capacity.
- Worked with external agencies to support the developmental needs of individual children as required.
- Consulted and collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team to provide best practice outcomes for families in their recovery journey.
Who are WE looking for?
We are looking for a driven and experienced social worker with early childhood experience to support the effective operations of the Family Services program. You will deliver a high-quality program demonstrating a trauma informed awareness of the issues presenting for children and families exposed to the abuses of alcohol and other drugs and facilitate their rehabilitation journey.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Hold a Degree in Social Work, Early Childhood Studies with Psychology, or Children’s Services as recognised by ACEQA (or equivalent) plus a minimum of the AOD Skill Set for Health Professionals (or a commitment to obtain within 6 months of employment)
- Have prior work experience in Children’s Services (or equivalent) and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of children’s aged 0-5 years (6-11 years highly desirable) and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLC)
- Hold a Current Level ll First Aid certificate
- Hold a Current Anaphylaxis Training certificate
- Be able to self-regulate and self-monitor own behaviours, practice self-reflection at all times, display a commitment to realistically assess own personal strengths, limitations, biases, and effectiveness, and remain open to feedback and constructive criticism
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance and application of inclusive practice when working with people from diverse communities, such as cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, abilities, spiritualities, ages and backgrounds
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance and application of intersectionality when working with people from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, abilities, spiritualities, ages and backgrounds

In line with recent Victorian Government mandatory vaccination requirements for the health industry, and OHV’s Mandatory Vaccination Policy, all Odyssey House Victoria staff are required to hold full vaccination status, and effective as of 1 March 2022 also have received the Booster Vaccination. Evidence of such vaccination status will be requested during the onboarding process and offers will be rescinded where such evidence cannot be provided.
