For example, as one of its programs, RedR Australia implements the Australia Assists program, the Australian Government’s humanitarian civilian deployment program, deploying technical specialists to help partners prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters and conflict globally. The seven year, circa $100 million program enables the mobilisation and deployment of specialists into geographic and thematic areas of priority in line with Australia’s humanitarian responsibilities and national interests.
Position Summary
The position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides strategic leadership and direction for RedR Australia maintaining a forward looking and agile organisation adaptive to the needs of the world’s most vulnerable people. Reporting to the Chair, the CEO will work closely with the RedR Australia Board of Directors to develop and implement the right culture and strategies to grow organisational impact and financial resilience. The CEO oversees enterprise and program risk and monitors high quality programs and services. The CEO ensures effective implementation of strategy, reports on organisational results, and amplifies impact and insight through appropriate advocacy and representation, satisfying the priorities of interested stakeholders without compromising RedR Australia independence.
The CEO has three direct reports: Chief Financial Officer, Program Director- Australia Assists and Commercial Director.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Provide a clear vision, purpose and performance targets for the organisation, delivering RedR’s vision, mission and objectives
- Progress RedR Australia by building on what has worked to date and to re-design, implement and extend the solutions that are fit for the future RedR Australia
- Specifically RedR Australia aims to include an emphasis on Australian domestic resilience, disaster response and recovery
- Operate as a positive role model
- Lead and manage a high performing, collaborative team, in a fit-for-purpose structure, which upholds and champions RedR’s culture and its values of accountability, integrity, empathy and collaboration
- Ensure that all members of the organisation have the clearest understanding of the articulated strategic objectives, the action to be taken, and the means by which progress can be monitored
- Provide leadership of RedR’s senior leadership team (SLT) and chair SLT meetings
- Oversee delivery of high quality international and domestic programs and service consistent with RedR’s purpose
- Oversee provision of a strong enterprise risk framework which allows RedR to proactively engage with and manage risk
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulation, including ACNC, ACFID, workplace law and financial, program and social inclusion audits
- Increase the value of RedR’s assets (finances, roster, training, partnerships and insights)
- Introduce future-focussed business systems that complement ongoing professionalisation and ensure RedR’s growth as a “Learning Organisation”
- Provide CEO leadership for collaboration and strengthening of RedR International
Establish and maintain constructive relationships with key stakeholders
- Nurture, negotiate, operationalise and expand strategic multifaceted partnerships and/or commercial agreements with governments, UN agencies, intergovernmental agencies, private sector, founding bodies and others – and create a relationship architecture and infrastructure that can deliver multiple programs and partnerships for shared impact
- Deliver consistent high-performing products and service, ensuring all potential and current stakeholders and clients maintain maximum confidence and trust in RedR Australia’s capability
- Ensure programs and partnerships are implemented and managed effectively
Service the conduct of Board meetings and provide advice ahead of governance decisions
- Provide the RedR Australia Board with trusted feedback, advice and proposals to support proactive and agile positioning to deliver on RedR’s vision, mission and values
- Work with the Chair to ensure the best quality information and analysis is provided in a timely fashion ahead of board meetings
- Support the RedR Chair in RedR International role requirements
Human Resources
- Ensure appropriate resource allocation across the organisation to enable delivery of the annual business plan
- Oversee and safeguard organisational culture by ensuring the selection of exceptional people and technical skills fit for the sector and organisation, and ensure they are adequately trained, resourced and supported to deliver on their agreed performance plans and organisational priorities
- Oversee the policy schedule and human resources audit schedules, and ensure progress on workforce capability
Finance
- Ensure that funding sources, relevant UN agencies and international NGOs, National Disaster Management Offices in neighbouring countries in particular, Australian NGOs, the founding bodies, relevant peak bodies and professional associations, and all potential buyers of RedR Australia services are able to develop maximum confidence in RedR Australia capability
- Explore and develop alternative sources of funding for the operations of the RedR Australia business, from organisations with values and behaviours consistent with those of RedR
- Oversee and ensure financial accountability and transparency, demonstrating effective charitable status and international standing
- Oversee preparation and management of sensible and effective budgets by balancing realistic calculations of anticipated revenue with best possible allocations to achieve business plan objectives
Communications
- Oversee a clear communications strategy and plan that maximises opportunities for advocacy and high value contributions, builds the RedR brand and reputation, and leverages program insights
- Be spokesperson for and representative of RedR, and conduct media appearances and high-level engagement with Government, business, international and sector partners
- Amplify RedR’s impact and insights for influence, advocacy and business development
Qualification, Knowledge, Experience and Essential Requirements
Essential:
- The ability to represent RedR at the highest levels of government, UN agencies, and business
- The ability to use RedR’s impact and insights for influence, advocacy and business development
- Demonstrated political and commercial nous
- Demonstrated ability to uphold and defend humanitarian or social protection law, principles and standards
- Willing to undertake travel interstate and internationally
- Have the right to work in Australia or appropriate visa
- This position will involve contact with children, people and at-risk communities. Applicants will be screened for their suitability to work, including police and comprehensive reference checks
- Tertiary qualifications
- Membership, or qualifications appropriate to be a Member, of the Australian Institute of Company Directors
Other Special Requirements:
- Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent will be required to undertake travel outside of usual business hours including during the weekend
- This is a global CEO role with significant international relationships requiring early morning and late night virtual or in person meetings
Desirable:
- Master’s degree or higher qualifications in Business, International Development, International Relations or similar
Knowledge and Experience
Required:
- Relevant CEO, Australian government SES or United Nations D-level experience or potential and demonstrated ability or potential to lead a dispersed multicultural organisation
- A working background in the humanitarian sector and knowledge of the Australian context within the international arena
- Demonstrated capacity for superior performance in operations, governance, representation, financial, people management and organisational growth
- Demonstrated ability to manage significant and varied stakeholder expectations, encompassing member, community, partner, government and financial stakeholders
Desirable:
- Ability to speak the languages of the United Nations
