About the organisation

Organisation Name : Magistrates' Court of Victoria

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority, and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state.

The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 per cent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

The MCV is expanding the Assessment and Referral Court (ARC) to all headquarter courts, including Ballarat Court in early 2024. ARC is part of a suite of therapeutic innovations at MCV and form part of the wider Court Support and Diversion Services team.

ARC is a solution-focused court underpinned by therapeutic jurisprudence and recovery-oriented mental health practice for people facing criminal matters who have a mental illness/or cognitive impairment. Hearings are less formal, non-adversarial and take a collaborative approach to address both well-being and the underlying causes of offending behaviours, as can be seen in this video.

You will attend Court on a monthly basis to provide expert advice to the Magistrate and other key stakeholders.

About you
