About the organisation
SCAI was established in July 2005 after its founders were inspired by a group of children they met while volunteering at an ‘orphanage’ in Kathmandu in 2004. After soon learning that most of the children were not actually orphans, but had been trafficked, enticed or sent from their homes in the hope of an education and brighter future, they set to work raising funds and teamed up with local Nepalese with a similar vision to create safer, meaningful alternatives.
In 2007, SCAI was established as an INGO in Nepal, and the founder moved to Nepal to run the INGO as Country Director. After establishing ‘Sunrise Home’, a residential home where orphaned, abandoned and other children suffering or at risk of abuse and exploitation could be cared for, the team established a reintegration program, which supported the return of children to their families. SCAI then moved its strategic focus to preventing children being unnecessarily separated from family in the first place, by providing education and other support to highly vulnerable children. Over the years, SCAI has empowered thousands of children and their families to create brighter futures for themselves.
SCAI is registered as an Incorporated Association in SA and as a charity with ACNC.
