Family Advocacy is a state wide, not for profit disability advocacy organisation that works with families to promote and defend the rights and interests of people with developmental disability. This is achieved by strengthening the advocacy role and influence of families so that they can speak out with, or at times on behalf, of their family member, or for people with developmental disability more broadly.

About the role

This role forms part of a dynamic team critical to the work of the organisation in defending and progressing the rights and interests of people with developmental disability so that they can enjoy the same opportunities and experiences that most Australians enjoy.

What you will be doing

  • Analysis and advice on structural and systemic barriers inhibiting the experiences of people with developmental disability across Australian society.
  • Developing and coordinating social change campaigns that lead to real change in the lives of people with developmental disability.
  • Supporting and developing the advocacy leadership development of families and their contribution to the social change efforts across the organisation.
  • Working alongside and building alliances and coalitions that support the social change required.
  • Prepare submissions, reports or discussion papers relating to Government policy, practice and legislation or as needed in consultation with the Executive Officer.

Essential Criteria (applications must address each criterion in writing and attach to application)

  • Commitment to the full inclusion of people with developmental disability
  • Commitment to the strength of families in advocating for change
  • Experience in contributing, building and maintaining effective alliances
  • Experience in developing and coordinating social change campaigns
  • Experience in building relationships and navigating complex political landscapes
  • Experience in research, report and submission writing
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently or collaborate as a member of a team
  • Experience of broad engagement with stakeholder groups from government to community-based organisation
  • Capacity to occasionally work weekends and evenings

Desirable criteria

  • Lived experience of disability or family member
  • Higher Education in Law, Social Policy and/or Political Science or similar
  • Understanding of Social Role Valorisation theory

Based: Hornsby/Hybrid                Hours: 24hr week                         Commencement: Immediately


Salary:
SCHADS Award 2010, Level 6.1-6.3, $110,103 – $114,983 FTE, pro rata on part time hours plus entitlements and salary packaging.
