CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL LEGAL AID SERVICE
YOUTH JUSTICE LEGAL OFFICER

CAALAS is funded by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department and Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to provide legal advice and representation to Aboriginal people of the Southern zone of the Northern Territory. CAALAS has a team of lawyers and support staff who provide quality representation in a culturally appropriate manner in the areas of Criminal, Civil and Family Law.

POSITION PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES:
Primary Functions of the Youth Justice Legal Officer include providing quality legal advice and advocacy for young Aboriginal clients in criminal law matters consistent with the principles of the Youth Justice Act NT.

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an experienced Youth Justice Lawyer. To excel in this position you would need to have:

 Experience in the practice of Criminal Law
 Experience in working with young people and an ability to communicate effectively with young Aboriginal people;
 A sound knowledge of the NT criminal legal system;
 An understanding of the needs of Aboriginal people in relation to the legal system and a commitment to advocacy; and
 Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.

CONDITIONS:
SALARY: $63,000.00 – $80,000.00 (including district allowance).
 Additional 9.5% superannuation paid on base salary.
 Salary sacrifice available.
 Six (6) weeks Annual Leave.
