About the role

The Opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Associate or someone with at least six years Post Qualification Experience to join our Pro Bono team in Sydney.

This role requires experience coordinating or managing a pro bono practice or demonstrable experience of working with people who are disadvantaged and marginalised through pro bono work or otherwise. This role also requires experience supervising the work of junior lawyers as well as the willingness and ability to take on responsibility for legal work, project management and administration.

This Pro Bono Manager role involves the coordination and management of the pro bono practice in Australia, working closely with the other full-time Australian Pro Bono Manager and full-time Pro Bono Lawyer (both based in Sydney) as well as the state volunteer Pro Bono Coordinators on the assessment and placement of requests for pro bono assistance, relationship development across the Australian pro bono practice, preparing submissions on public interest issues and (where capacity allows) undertaking pro bono work. This role also involves a significant amount of supervision and support of the Firm’s lawyers in the completion of their pro bono matters, as well as the lawyers undertaking pro bono secondments and clinics.

This role also involves significant practice management of the Australian pro bono practice (including risk management, budgeting, reporting, billing of disbursements, pro bono hours audits, WHS compliance and maintenance of systems and processes for the effective and efficient running of the pro bono practice throughout Australia).

This role also involves working with the Global Pro Bono and Corporate Responsibility Partner (based in Sydney) in involving the in-house teams of commercial clients in pro bono projects within Australia.

Desired Skills and Experience:

To succeed in this role you will need:

• A Senior Associate or at least six years Post Qualification Experience
• Demonstrable experience in working with people who are disadvantaged and marginalised through pro bono work or otherwise
• Experience supervising the work of junior lawyers
• Willingness and ability to take on responsibility for legal work, project management and administration
• An understanding of the legal needs of people who are disadvantaged and marginalised and organisations which assist such people
• Highly developed written and verbal communications skills
• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of people
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
• Team-focused but also able to work independently
• Experience coordinating or managing a pro bono practice desirable
• Knowledge of and/or experience of the NSW Victim Services scheme desirable
• Knowledge of and/or experience in the drafting of and advising on Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Appointments of Enduring Guardian desirable
