About the organisation

Organisation Name : Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO)
AFAO is the national federation for the HIV community response in Australia. AFAO works to end HIV transmission and reduce its impact on communities in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. AFAO’s members are the AIDS Councils in each state and territory; the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA); the Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL); Anwernekenhe National HIV Alliance (ANA); and Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association. AFAO’s affiliate member organisations – spanning community, research and clinical workforce – share AFAO’s values and support the work we do. Our member organisations represent the diverse communities most affected by HIV – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intesex communities, sex workers, people who inject drugs, people with HIV and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Our close connections with our communities provide us with rapid intelligence on changes in Australia’s HIV epidemic, allow us to mobilise and respond quickly and to act as a trusted communication channel to government, research and clinical partners.

About the role

• Are you passionate about leading research that creates social change?
• Are you a critical thinker with a solutions focussed approach?
• Do you want to work in a community organisation that’s leading Australia’s efforts to end HIV transmission?

Australia’s national peak HIV organisation, the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO), is looking for a Senior Research Officer to implement a strategy that enables AFAO and Australia’s state and territory AIDS Councils to facilitate more meaningful and informed partnerships between researchers and HIV community organisations.

The Senior Research Officer will be responsible for developing sustained and strategic engagement with research to raise the visibility of community relevant questions and issues and ensure these are incorporated into research priorities. The position plays a critical role in supporting AFAO to achieve its goals of leading Australia’s community response to HIV and advocating for AFAO’s members’ and communities’ interests.

The Senior Research Officer is required to exercise considerable judgement in liaising with stakeholders and formulating and responding to issues that may impact AFAO’s reputation and discusses issues of potential sensitivity with the Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
This role is about creating change that improves our national response to HIV and supports Australia to meet its targets in the National HIV Strategy. It also draws upon the intelligence, activity and goodwill AFAO and its membership have developed with researchers to and through its networks to formulate positions and coordinate national action on HIV.

The Senior Research Officer reports directly to the Deputy CEO.
